Keruing / Apitong : The Robust Hardwood for Demanding Applications

At Luminous Enterprises, we are proud to offer Keruing, also widely known as Apitong, a highly versatile and exceptionally durable hardwood species primarily sourced from Southeast Asia. Comprising timber from various species within the Dipterocarpus genus, Keruing/Apitong is renowned for its impressive strength, resilience, and distinctive appearance, making it a preferred choice for demanding applications worldwide.

Key Features

Exceptional Strength & Hardness

Keruing/Apitong is a dense hardwood, with an average density ranging from 640 to 960 kg/m³ (at 12% moisture content), making it significantly harder and stronger than many common hardwoods like Red Oak. It boasts high bending and crushing strength, making it ideal for load-bearing structures.

Distinctive Appearance

The heartwood typically ranges from light red to reddish-brown or dark brown, often darkening upon exposure. Its grain is generally straight but can be shallowly interlocked, contributing to a moderately coarse to coarse, yet even, texture. The presence of natural oleo-resin can sometimes exude, which paradoxically aids in its preservation.

Natural Durability

The heartwood of Keruing/Apitong is moderately durable, exhibiting good natural resistance to decay and certain pests. While not entirely immune to all termite species, its inherent properties contribute to its long lifespan, especially when properly treated and maintained.

Good Workability (with care)

Despite its density, Keruing/Apitong can be worked with standard woodworking tools. However, due to its hardness and occasional silica content, sharp, tungsten-tipped tools are recommended to prevent blunting. It takes nails and screws reasonably well, and while gluing properties can vary, it generally accepts finishes satisfactorily, though resin content may require careful preparation.

Cost-Effective Durability

Compared to some other premium hardwoods, Keruing/Apitong often offers a more affordable price point for its level of strength and durability, providing excellent value for demanding projects.

Applications

The robust properties of Keruing/Apitong make it an outstanding choice for a wide range of heavy-duty and structural applications, as well as various other uses:

Transportation

Construction & Structural

General Woodworking

Care & Maintenance

While Keruing/Apitong is naturally durable, proper care and maintenance are essential to maximize its lifespan and maintain its aesthetic appeal, especially in outdoor applications:

Regular Cleaning

Keep the wood surface clean from dirt, debris, and contaminants using a broom or mild soap solution with a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or high-pressure washing that could damage the wood fibers.

Sealing & Protection

For outdoor use, it is crucial to apply a high-quality exterior-grade wood sealant or oil-based wood preservative. This helps prevent moisture penetration, enhances durability, and protects against UV degradation. Reapplication, typically annually or as needed based on climate and exposure, is recommended.

Prevent Standing Water

Ensure proper drainage to prevent water from pooling on the surface, as prolonged moisture can lead to decay.

Load Distribution (for vehicle decking)

For applications like trailer decking, proper load distribution is vital to prevent excessive stress on specific areas and maintain the wood's structural integrity.

Resin Exudation

Keruing/Apitong may naturally exude resin, especially when exposed to heat or humidity. While this is a natural characteristic, it can be managed with proper finishing and cleaning.

Prevent Standing Water

Ensure proper drainage to prevent water from pooling on the surface, as prolonged moisture can lead to decay.

By choosing Keruing/Apitong from Luminous Enterprises, you are selecting a timber that offers exceptional performance, enduring beauty, and a reliable solution for your most demanding projects.
